Mazon Monday #344: Recap for Mazon Creek Fossil Day 2026

This is Mazon Monday post #344. What’s your favorite Mazon Creek fossil? Tell us at esconi.info@gmail.com.

Mazon Creek Fossil Day 2026 at the Coal City Public Library was a huge success! We had a great turnout and some wonderful fossil displays. Many attendees brought fossils of their own, either to have them identified or simply to share their finds with fellow fossil enthusiasts.

The Field Museum had a table where they discussed their plans for “Tales of Mazonia”, a graphic novel.

George Holub brought a nice sea anemone and told us some old collecting stories.

Merry Jo Montgomery had an absolutely breathtaking cone that you’ll see more of in an upcoming Fossil Friday.

Kane McLuckie brought in a nice coprolite he found recently.

Rich and Peggy Rock stopped by. It’s always good to see them.

Brian Sparks brought a very nice millipede and a detailed seed, both collected from Dresden.

Here’s Pete Rock’s mouthwatering display.

Marty Houdek brought in some stunners from Pit 3. Marty always has good stories of the old days.

Chris Berg’s display was a nice mixture across the many Mazon Creek localities.

Somehow, I neglected to get a photo of my own display this year. If you took a photo, please send it in.

Thanks go out to all the volunteers and attendees. Special thanks for those that let us get some photos for future Fossil Fridays!
