Fossil Friday #341: Mazon Creek Coprolite

This is the “Fossil Friday” post #341. Expect this to be a regular feature of the website. We will post fossil pictures you send in to esconi.info@gmail.com. Please include a short description or story. Check the #FossilFriday Bluesky/Twitter hash tag for contributions from around the world!

Kane McLuckie and his father, Robert, brought one of Kane’s recent fossil finds to our Mazon Creek Fossil Day event. It’s a large Mazon Creek coprolite found near their house. Coprolites are fairly common. If you find one, get out a magnifying glass and have a closer look. You can all kinds of things in coprolites… scales, plant parts, seeds, calcareous worms, and even bones!

If you’ve been following this website for a while, you’ll recognize that famous last name – McLuckie. Robert’s great aunt and uncle are John and Lucy McLuckie! They were both long-time Mazon Creek fossil collectors. John worked in the strip mines collecting choice fossils on his lunch hour. Their collection was donated to the Smithsonian in 1989 (see Mazon Monday #265).

Thanks for sharing, Kane!
