Fossil Friday #139: Lobatopteris tenuinervis from Danville

This is the “Fossil Friday” post #139.  Expect this to be a somewhat regular feature of the website.  We will post any fossil pictures you send in to esconi.info@gmail.com.  Please include a short description or story.  Check the #FossilFriday Twitter hash tag for contributions from around the world!

ESCONI member Phil Anderson sent us a very interesting fern from the ESCONI field trips to a Danville spoil pile. This is a specimen of Lobatopteris tenuinervis, which is a fern in the order Filicopsida.  You can read more about the flora of the Herrin coal in Mazon Monday #86.

This gorgeous specimen has great color contrast.  The concretion is very thin, much thinner than what is usually seen.  Thanks for sharing this beautiful fossil, Phil!
