Fossil Friday #57: Cyperites bicarinatus

This is the “Fossil Friday” post #57.  Expect this to be a somewhat regular feature of the website.  We will post any fossil pictures you send in to esconi.info@gmail.com.  Please include a short description or story.  Check the #FossilFriday Twitter hash tag for contributions from around the world!

For this week, we have a few examples of Cyperites bicarinatus.  These specimens were found in the area around Pit 2.  These tapered grass-like leaves were part of the foliage of Carboniferous Period plants like Lepidodenron and Sigilaria.  These fossils are pretty common in some of the Mazon Creek localities.
