Fossil Friday #35: Alethopteris sullivantii

This is the “Fossil Friday” post #35.  Expect this to be a somewhat regular feature of the website.  We will post any fossil pictures you send in to esconi.info@gmail.com.  Please include a short description or story.  Check the #FossilFriday Twitter hash tag for contributions from around the world!

We’ve been on a Alethopteris theme lately with last week Friday’s Alethopteris serlii from the Field Museum and Monday’s Species Spotlight on Alethopteris sullivantii.  We’ll finish up this week with a brand new specimen of Alethopteris sullivantii.  This specimen was collected a maybe five years ago in the famed Pit 2 of the Mazon Creek fossil locality.  It sat in a bucket until last Fall, when it finally was placed in a container to go through the freeze/thaw process.  A few days ago it finally opened… and here it is!
