Fossil Friday #132: Megistocrinus

This is “Fossil Friday” post #132.  Expect this to be a somewhat regular feature of the website.  We will post any fossil pictures you send in to esconi.info@gmail.com.  Please include a short description or story.  Check the #FossilFriday Twitter hash tag for contributions from around the world!

We have a change pace for this week’s Fossil Friday.  How about a Megistocrinus crinoid from Alpena, Michigan.  The Alpena Limestone dates to the Middle Devonian.  Crinoids are echinoderms and are related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars.  This is a fossilized calyx, which is the top part of the crinoid.

This gorgeous specimen is part of ESCONI member Becky Monroe’s collection.  You may remember her Mazon Creek shrimp just a few weeks ago in Fossil Friday #128.  Thanks for sharing photos of this beautiful fossil!  She found it along some railroad tracks in Michigan… that is some luck.  You have a great eye!
