Fossil Friday #21: Crinoid from Arkona, Ontario, Canada

This is the “Fossil Friday” post #21.  Expect this to be a somewhat regular feature of the website.  We will post any fossil pictures you send in to esconi.info@gmail.com.  Please include a short description or story.  Check the #FossilFriday Twitter hash tag for contributions from around the world!

This week’s fossil is an excellent crinoid from either Arkona, Ontario, Canda or Sylvania, OH.  The Arkona Shale dates to the Middle Devonian Period about 390 million years ago.  It occurred at a similar time to the Silica Shale which outcrops near Sylvania, OH.  Here is a paper that has many details of the fossils that can be found at both localities.

This crinoid belongs to ESCONI Historian Keith Robitschek.  Keith purchased this piece unprepared and prepared it late last year.  It’s great in this picture, but breathtaking in person.
