Throwback Thursday #342: Looking Back At ESCONI for November 2026

This is Throwback Thursday #342. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc …), please send them to esconi.info@gmail.com. Thanks!

25 Years Ago – November 2001

  • ESCONI made a $200 donation to the Tribune Fund for the victims of September 11th.
  • The publication of “Creature Corner” was announced in the newsletter (see Mazon Monday #33). The book was a collection of the articles by Any Hay, illustrated by Don Auler.
  • Looking back at October 2001, for the Paleontology Study Group, the group attended the 2001 Mazon Creek Open House, which was a huge success. Jenny McElwain of the Field Museum gave a talk about the plants and environment of Mazon Creek. Jim and Mary Fairchild held a reception at their home after the event.
  • There was a report about the 2001 ESCONI Flea Market. It was well attended!
  • The General Meeting was “Pyramids and Cleopatra.”
  • The November Paleontology Group Meeting was a presentation by Chris Cozart and John Catalani about Blastoids.

50 Years Ago – November 1976

  • For the General Meeting, Don Behnke gave a presentation entitled “Photomicrographs of Micromounts”. Don was a lifelong micromount enthusiast, who did many presentations for ESCONI over the years.
  • The Mineralogy Study Group was discussing “The Sulfates”.
  • The Juniors were learning about “Cleaning, Preserving, and Naming of Fossils”.
  • The Paleontology Study Group had a presentation by Gordon Baird about how and where to find fossils. He targeted New York state and the Mazon Creek areas.
  • Kathy and Judy Dedina joined ESCONI. They appeared in the list of new members. Both were very involved over the years. Kathy served as president in the early 1990’s and Judy was club historian for many years.
  • The Micromount of the Month was the… Tully Monster!

70 Years Ago – November 1956

  • The Regular Meeting featured on “Limestone” a talk by Isabel Bassett Wasson. Have a look at our past posts about her – Throwback Thursday #284 and Throwback Thursday #292.
  • There was a list of clubs in the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies. There were a bunch from the Chicago area, including Chicago Rocks and Minerals Society.
  • In the Grapevine, John McLuckie gave his wife a day off work so they could go fossil collecting in Braidwood. Wouldn’t you like to know where they went?
