Comments on the DOI (BLM) proposed PRPA rules will only be accepted until Monday, February 6th, 2017. Here are the issues in a nutshell: 1 “Casual collecting” is too restrictive 2 “Common” is not defined, and it should be noted that only scientifically valuable specimens are what PRPA intend should be in repositories, not specific taxa. All non-vertebrates s/b considered common until otherwise stated 3 “Reasonable amount” that can be casually collected is too restrictive 4 “Negligible disturbance” guidelines are too restrictive and should just be equated to “low impact” activity 5 “Research” should be allowed on casually collected specimens 6 …

The class will run 10 to 12 hours each day and the cost is approximately $100 (depends on how many sign up, so figure ~$110). Preserved Trilobite eggs from the Ordovician of New York State

The eggs were found associated with 2 Triarthrus eatoni trilobites from the Ordovician Whetstone Gulf Formation (Lorraine Group), in upstate New York. The eggs were found in the cephala (head) of the trilobites, which is similar to the method of reproduction in Horseshoe Crabs. In Horseshoe Crabs, the males cluster around the females as they secrete eggs in order to fertilise them externally. The original paper appeared in the January edition of the Journal Geology. Read more: Giant Sequoia ‘Tunnel Tree’ in California Is Toppled by StormThe New York Times has a story about an ancient giant sequoia tree that fell in a heavy storm on Sunday. The tree, estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, was referred to as the “Pioneer Cabin Tree”. The base of the tree was carved out in the 1880s, which led to it becoming a local tourist attraction. At one time, cars were allowed to drive through the tunnel, but in recent years it was only accessible as part of a 1.5 mile hiking trail. A corresponding NPR story is here.

- Fossil Friday #317: Silurian Aquatic Scorpion From the Kokomo Limestone
This undescribed aquatic scorpion dates to the Silurian Period and was collected by Sam Ciurca from the Kokomo Limestone at Yeoman Quarry near Kokomo, Indiana, in 1975. Measuring about 2 inches in length, this animal is extraordinarily rare, with only a handful of specimens known.
