Presented by: ELIZABETH THIELEN, ELGIN ROCK and MINERAL CLUB
Liz Thielen is a Certified Gambling Counselor in Illinois working in addictions treatment for 25 years, but a rockhound for 45 years. Growing up in Central New York State, Liz was fortunate to visit the Herkimer Diamond Mines frequently since the age of six. Despite living in Illinois, Liz still visits the mines at least once a year, also collecting fossils and other minerals wherever she can find them around the country in her travels.
Topic: “FIND YOUR INNER ROCKHOUND” – Highlighting the HERKIMER DIAMOND MINES (Herkimer County, NY)
Liz’s presentation goes through how her interest in collecting started, including many facts and pictures, and even videos of collecting at the Herkimer Diamond Mines. She will have a display case with hundreds of the Herkimer diamonds she has found over the years, along with some small and large examples in the matrix. Liz will also have a tray of loose Herkimer diamonds for people to pass during the presentation, but they can also “paw” through the display case after the presentation. She will show and discuss the tools that she uses, as they are an ideal “kit” for collecting, but she will also stress that you can just go and surface collect and have a great time!
