Throwback Thursday #301: Century of Progress – Sinclair Exhibit

This is Throwback Thursday #301. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc …), please send them to  esconi.info@gmail.com. Thanks!  email:esconi.info@gmail.com.

Ran across an interesting post on the Original Chicago Group on Facebook last month (December 2025). In the post, Shane Egan shared some photos from the Century of Progress International Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair, held from May 27th to October 31st in 1933.

Shane’s post was of photos taken between July 23rd – 25th, 1933 from a photo album he purchased.

Recently purchased a photo album that originally belonged to someone who thoroughly documented their Century of Progress visit between July 23-25th, 1933. The photos have some exposure issues, but have excellent content illustrating the World’s Fair when it came to Chicago.

There are 130 photos. The photos relevant to this post are the ones of the dinosaurs in Sinclair Oil’s exhibit, which featured dinosaurs. You might remember that Sinclair Oil used a green sauropod (Brontosaurus) for its mascot. Here’s a photo from a gas station just outside Sinclair, Wyoming.

The exhibit included a bunch of dinosaurs, including brontosaurus, hadrosaurus, triceratops, protoceratops, stegosaurus, and others.

Photos from the fair.

Thanks for letting us use these photos, Shane!
