A Pecos Diamond

25 Years Ago – November 1997

  • Fluorite was the topic of the General Meeting.  Jack Masters of the ISGS was the presenter.
  • The Paleontology Study Group discussed the Pennsylvanian Period.
  • Don Cronauer gave a presentation on fossil jewelry to the Lapidary Study Group.
  • The newsletter had an article about Paul Sereno’s “Tracking Dinosaurs on Wandering Continents” at the University of Chicago.

50 Years Ago – November 1972

  • The topic of the General Meeting was “The Mississippian Indians of Cahokia” by James P. Anderson, Curator of the Cahokia Mounds Museum in East St. Louis, IL
  • The Mineralogy Study Group had a program on “Keokuk Geodes” by Horace Greene.
  • Joe Valenta gave a program about faceting to the Lapidary Study Group.
  • The Micro-Mount of the Month was “Pecos Diamonds” by Dick Ade.
  • Anthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey died at age 69 in London.

70 Years Ago – November 1952

  • An auction was held on November 7th, 1952.  Material was donated by ESCONI members.
  • Stevens Norvell wrote an article about Illinois’ crypto-volcano for the newsletter.  The This hidden volcano is located under the Village of Des Plaines.
  • Mexican Onyx can be found in a deposit in the Galena-Dubuque area near Dickeyville.  If you go seeking it, stop at the famous Dickeyville Grotto.
  • Bill Kelly wrote a tip on determining “good” Limburger cheese.  Place a known “good” chunk next to a questionable piece.  If the “good” one moves away, the later piece is “bad”.
