Throwback Thursday #40: 25 and 50 Years Ago

25 Years Ago – January 1996

  • An ESCONI Scholarship in the name of Bill Allaway was established. Bill had recently passed away and was a founder of ESCONI.
  • The general meeting program was on the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines.
  • The Mineralogy/Micromount Study Group’s program was about the minerals of lava flows.
  • The Lapidary group was doing wire wrapping and copper sculpturing.
  • The Archeology study group talked about the Olmec of Mesoamerica.
  • ESCONI dues were $15.

50 Years Ago – January 1971

  • The general meeting was held at Downer’s Grove High School, and the program was on the Tarahumara Indians of Copper Canyon in Mexico.
  • The Downer’s Grove Juniors were studying iron, copper and fluorite. There was also a Medinah Juniors Group.
  • The Archaeology Group studied the Kensington Rune Stone.
  • The club had a tour of the Lizzadro Museum.
  • Club dues were $2 per adult, with lesser amounts for “associate” members, out-of-town members and juniors.
