Etymology of Species Names

Many of us know that the greek and latin languages are the basis of many species names.  To decode them into their meaning, use these pages:

List of Greek and Latin roots and Latin and Greek words commonly used in systematic names

Some examples:

Triceratops, Tri (three), cera (horn), ops (eye, face), three horned face

Tyrannosaurus, Tyranno (absolute ruler, tyrant) saurus (lizard), tyrant lizard

Dimetrodon, Di (two), metro (measures), don (dont, tooth), two types of teeth

Try it yourself for “Dinosaur”, “Pteradactyl”, “Trilobite”, and “Pecopteris”.
