Andy Jansen, ESCONI Librarian, provides this historic article (.pdf), written by ESCONI’s First Secretary, Stella Barrick, on how the first ESCONI book was published back in the early 1960s. Here is an excerpt:

… In 1956 a member of the museum (Chicago Natural History Musuem) staff showed this manuscript (George Langford’s “fern” fossil manuscript) to Harry Witmer, another gifted amateur who seeks to identify all his finds. Mr. Witmer brought this manuscript to the attention of the Paleontology Study Group of the Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois (ESCONI). It was agreed that the manuscript should be printed as an aid to fossil collectors and as an addition to the great nature books of our country….

It is inspiring to see that over fifty years later, ESCONI, ESCONI Associates and the Paleontology Study Group has created a new important addition to the great nature books of our country!
