Throwback Thursday #302: More Old Cars

This is Throwback Thursday #302. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc …), please send them to  esconi.info@gmail.com. Thanks!  email:esconi.info@gmail.com.

In Throwback Thursday #267, we posted field trip photos that showed old cars from the 1950s and 1960s. With the frigid weather this week and last… here’s another group of photos to get everyone thinking of spring. It’s just around a few more corners. Just think come March 1st, it will be time to get out and find some nice Mazon Creek fossils!

This first photo is from a Braidwood area field trip on September 27th, 1959. The McLuckies hosted yearly field trips for many years. ESCONI participated in those trips throughout the 1950s. This Standard Oil gas station stood on Route 66 in Braidwood, IL. Look at those cars… looks like a 1957 Ford Ranch Wagon on the left, something like a 1953-1954 Chevy Bel Air or a 210 series in the middle, and on the right it could be a 1955 Mercury, maybe a Montclair.

This photo is from the strip mines after meeting at the gas station. These cars are far away, but the white car on the right might be a 1955-1956 Chrysler or Packard. The car in the distance under the trees might be a 1950 Cadillac Series 62.

Another photo in the strip mine. This is a 1957 Ford station wagon, either a Ford Country sedan or a Ranch Wagon. This would have been a popular car for hauling gear, fossils, or picnic supplies on ESCONI outings like this one.

This photo is from the 1959 Combined Clubs field trip to Braidwood. The car in the foreground is likely a 1947 or 1948 Buick Super of Roadmaster Sedanette (also known as a fastback).

This photo from Galena in 1958 has a couple old cars at the bottom of the hill. The one on the right appears to be a 1957 Cadillac, possibly a Series 62. The car on the left is very hard to see, but it could be another 1957 Cadillac.

There are some familiar faces in this one. The woman in the pink dress is Hazel Bonow. She was a long time member and very involved in ESCONI. It looks like they were out collecting minerals. The car is a 1957 Buick station wagon, most likely the 2-door Special Riviera Estate Wagon.

Here’s another view of the 1957 Buick station wagon, most likely the 2-door Special Riviera Estate Wagon.

This is 1950 Mercury Eight 2-door sedan on a field trip to Wisconsin in 1954.
